These incredibly powerful and strangely intriguing objects were collected by philanthropist american heiress, Lillian Hoffman, who crammed her Potts Point apartment with an astounding array of tribal art from around the world. These pieces are beautifully decorated ancestor relics from the Papua region and feature carved and embellished skulls.

I recently borrowed this publication from Lauren Berkowitz. The New Sculpture 1965-75: Between Geometry and Gesture looks at the work of Hesse, Smithson, Tuttle, Nauman, Serra, Le Va, Saret, Sonner, Benglis and Shapiro, major heavy weights in minimalism, feminist art, land art, etc. Published by the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY, 1990, it catalogues an exhibition organised by Richard Armstrong and Richard Marshall. Such an impressive text, with essays from Lucy Lippard, Robert Morris, Marcia Tucker, Lawrence Alloway, Rosalind Krauss etc., but worth spending some time with for the images alone. And timely for Helen Hughes and I in the formulation of our essay for Discreet Objects at Utopian Slumps.

This amazing refurbishment in an old cinema in Milan really made my day. Now we’ve all seen the Simparch Free Basin but hey, it’s so good why not do it again. Apart from the bowl I am really into what they did with the rest of the space and the my favourite part is that they actually got the space! An old cinema – what could be better. Leaving those tiles was probably the best choice Supermetrico made.

Colourful illustrator Jon Burgerman has collaborated with digital design studio ustwo to create an iphone and ipod touch music game, Inkstrumentals. Jon has created 31 unique characters for the app and each character has its own wacky samples and noises.

The user can make different tunes by mixing the characters together and treating them much like a synthesiser keyboard. The sounds you create can be shared with other users and can be sent direct to youtube for the world to enjoy! You can buy the app here… and keep in the loop with Jon’s other projects on his site.

The Walker Art Center is running a promotional campaign called “Collective Imagination” for it’s current exhibitions Benches and Binoculars and Event Horizon, both of which are exhibitions of the Walkers permanent collection. Through the same salon-style layout as Benches and Binoculars, the campaign is meant to evoke the free flow of ideas that is generated in the exhibitions by placing non-art related imagery and text side by side with imagery of artworks, blurring their distinctions and hinting at the social and historical context from which the works came from.

A trip to the Rose Seidler house in Wahroonga has re-ignited my interest with architect designed homes.
The clean modern shapes, the considered living areas, genius storage and devotion to natural light and in many instances a oneness with nature.

On a visit to the home of Ray and Charles Eames in Santa Monica last year my preconceptions were totally changed, the space which has been preserved in the original condition when the Eames’s lived there was literally filled to the brim with possessions, as you would expect their furniture but also endless clutter; wild ferns, endless shelves of books, keep sakes from travels, animal skins and more ferns. The space really reflected their ethos of design for the masses

At the opposite end of the spectrum but with surprising similarities Sanaa the firm of Japanese architects also seem to be everywhere.  The clean stark spaces are incredibly futuristic and minimal, but again built around the exploitation of natural light and a link back to nature.  As with a lot of modern architecture there is definitely an affinity with the art world, an exhibition at The Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation last year showcased a perspex maze of their work.
Commissioned to undertake huge commercial projects from Diors shops to international art galleries, it’s their home spaces that seem really unique and special to me.
